Town of Crested Butte
Crested Butte is known as the “Last Great Colorado Ski Town”. Nestled deep in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, this special town has an eclectic and vibrant personality that is unique from any other ski destination. Crested Butte, taking its name from the twisted peak that towers above town, began as a booming silver mining town in the late 1800’s. When the mines began to close, the town began to shrink until the ski industry took hold in the 1960’s. Now, brightly colored historic buildings line Elk Avenue, the hub of dining, shopping and socializing in downtown Crested Butte. World class restaurants, locally roasted coffee, art galleries, locally distilled rum, retail shops, live music and more can be found on the charismatic half mile stretch. The skiing and winter recreation obviously draw visitors to town in the winter, but the summers in Crested Butte are just as magical. Many locals say “The winters brought me here and the summers keep me here”. During the winter and summer months, the town is full of life. The majority of visitors travel from Texas, Oklahoma, and the Front Range of Colorado, but travelers from all over the world can be found in Crested Butte. Some come to visit and decide to stay forever!
The locals are some of the happiest people you’ll meet anywhere. Approximately 1,500 residents call Crested Butte home year round. They are inviting and extremely active, participating in an array of outdoor recreation. With seemingly endless access to skiing, mountain biking, snowmobiling, hiking, cross country skiing, rafting, and fat biking; it’s no wonder why Crested Butte is known for being one of the healthiest and happiest places to live in Colorado. The town has also hosted some major sporting events including the Alley Loop, X-Games, Pro Cycling Challenge, Fat Bike Worlds, the Ultimate Snowmobiler, extreme skiing competitions, and more. The town of Crested Butte is a highly desirable place to live in Gunnison county due to the proximity to shops and restaurants and the K-12 community school, which was ranked the sixth best public school in the state of Colorado.

Small Communities Just South of Crested Butte
Riverbend ~ A small community, just one mile south of Crested Butte offers a selection of single family homes and condos which each include fishing rights on the Slate River. Golfing Communities near The Club at Crested Butte
Two miles south of Crested Butte, the golfing communities of Skyland and Buckhorn Ranch are located in an expansive meadow at the base of the mountain. The Skyland neighborhood in intertwined with The Club at Crested Butte. The Club offers over 160 acres of pristine wilderness. Slate River Road
Slate River Road is known as the gateway to Paradise. The road leads to Paradise Divide and the Gunnison National Forest providing year round access to recreation for the Slate River Road communities of Alpine Meadows and Wildbird. Within minutes, residents of these communities can be in the backcountry on skis, snowmobiles, mountain bikes, or fishing along the Slate River. There is easy access to hiking and biking trails in the Lower Loop trail system and the Lupine trail. Mt. Crested Butte and the Crested Butte Mountain Resort as well as the town of Crested Butte are within a couple of miles from the centrally located Slate River Road communities.

The Washington Gulch provides “out the back door” access to the Gunnison National Forest and the Paradise Divide. Mt. Crested Butte

The town of Mt. Crested Butte is nestled high in the Rocky Mountains three miles north of Crested Butte. The small town is home to the Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) as well as residential subdivisions, condos, dining, shopping, and outstanding views of the West Elk mountain range. At an elevation of nine thousand three hundred seventy-five (9,375) feet above sea level, approximately eight hundred (800) residents call Mt. Crested Butte home year round. The ski area has over fifteen hundred (1,500) skiable acres with 121 total runs, 15 lifts, and a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs for all abilities. At the summit, the elevation is twelve thousand one hundred and sixty-two (12,162) feet. The ski area offers winter and summer fun. The Adventure Park, located at the base area offers miniature golf, bungee trampolines, and a climbing wall, as well as a tubing hill. In the summer, Crested Butte Mountain Resort runs two lifts, allowing hikers and mountain bikers access to the 23 trails and over 30 miles of single track. The base area has a variety of restaurants and outdoor shops that are open during the winter and summer. Easy access to the town of Crested Butte is available year round with the free town shuttle.
Elk Run ~ One of Mt. Crested Butte’s most coveted neighborhoods, Elk Run prioritizes the seclusion of each parcel. Large parcels combined with mature aspen groves provide maximum privacy for the mountain homes in this neighborhood. Elk run owners also have access to the Gold Link Homeowners trail, providing easy access to skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.
Gold Link ~ A smaller community, with only 30 home sites, Gold Link has a prime skier/mountain biker friendly location. Pitchfork ~ The residential neighborhood on the west end of Mt. Crested Butte has 100 home sites, 30% of which are affordable housing for qualified Gunnison county residents. Prospect ~ Located on the northwest side of the mountain, the Prospect subdivision is Mt. Crested Butte’s premier ski in/ski out location. Residents have access to both the Gold Link and Prospect chairlifts from their parcel, offering extremely convenient ski access and maximum time for relaxation. This relatively newer neighborhood still has several undeveloped parcels awaiting their ultimate mountain dream homes.
The Summit ~ Located on the southwest side of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, the Summit is one of the few ski in/ski out communities. The views include the rocky Mt. Crested Butte, Red Lady, and Mt. Axtell. Ski access is granted via the West Wall lift in the winter and many mountain biking trails are easily accessible in the summer.
Wildhorse at Prospect ~ A master planned luxury community with 55 home sites. Located next to the ski slopes, these mountain homes have incredible views of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness and the Upper East river valley. Crested Butte South

Crested Butte South, also known as CB South by the locals, is a family oriented subdivision with a high number of year round residents. The subdivision is located 8 miles south of the town of Crested Butte on the east side of CO Highway 135. CB South is the largest subdivision in the Gunnison Valley, accounting for approximately 10% of all Gunnison County residents. The 460+ acres is primarily residential with a handful of businesses and over 30 acres of open or park space. Red Mountain Park is centrally located in CB South. The park has a fully fenced softball field, fully fenced tennis court, climbing boulder, skating pond, curling sheets, bicycle “pump” track, playground, picnic areas, and public restrooms. Red Mountain Park is also home to an NHL sized hockey rink where you will find open skate times or league games. Crested Butte South has a small commercial zone consisting of a coffee shop, landscaping and gardening store, general store, restaurent, and childcare facility.
Crested Butte South mainly consists of medium sized family homes and is considered one of the more affordable areas within the upper valley. Because of this, many locals and their families call CB South home.
Almont is located on CO Highway 135 between Gunnison and Crested Butte. The small town sits along the canyon banks where the East River and the Taylor River combine to form the Gunnison River. The area is known for having some of the best fly fishing in Colorado. With a population of approximately 300 people, the small community of Almont is made up of a post office, a couple fly fishing shops, whitewater rafting companies, a local restaurant and bar and vacation resorts offering small cabin lodging.
The Taylor Canyon extends twenty miles northeast from Almont to the Taylor Reservoir. The canyon and reservoir offer incredible camping, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting, horse back riding, and of course- world class fly fishing. The Spring Creek Campground is located about half way between Almont and the Taylor Reservoir. Bordering the creek, it is an excellent location for fishing, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and camping. The Taylor and Rosy Campgrounds and Harmel’s Resort is also located at the base of Spring Creek. The resort offers horseback riding, a day spa, fishing, whitewater rafting and rock climbing.
Homes available in the Almont, Spring Creek, and the Taylor Canyon communities range from small charming cabins to premier world class fishing lodges. These cabin style and log homes provide convenient, easy access to a plethora of outdoor activities and offer a sense of immersion in the outdoors, while remaining nearby the amenities of Crested Butte and Gunnison.
Ohio Creek Valley

The entrance to the Ohio Creek Valley is located approximately ten miles north of Gunnison. The Ohio Creek Valley is home to spectacular large ranches including the Eagle Ridge Ranch, which is the largest conservation easement property in Gunnison County. Therefore, the water rights, mineral rights, time rights, and the views will be preserved and protected forever. The Ohio Creek Valley is home to fantastic fishing in either the Ohio Creek or one of many ponds. The area is home to abundant wildlife including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and bald eagles.
Homes and ranches in the Ohio Creek Valley tend to be large custom built homes and lodges, built on large parcels with maximum privacy and immediate access to wilderness areas.
City of Gunnison
The City of Gunnison is located on CO Hwy 50 nestled between the Gunnison National Forest and the Rio Grand National Forest. Gunnison is the largest city within Gunnison County, with approximately 6,000 year round residents. As home to Western State Colorado University, a four year accredited university, there is also a large student population throughout the year in Gunnison.
The city began in the early 1800’s with fur traders and mountain men. Later, it transitioned to mining and, eventually, ranching and farming. Today, Gunnison is a tribute to its wild west past. The western culture is alive and well as Gunnison remains largely a farming and ranching community. Cattlemen’s Days, a 10-day rodeo and stock show event is evidence of the strong western heritage in Gunnison. The event started over 115 years ago and still happens every summer.
Gunnison is the county seat and because if its size and location, serves as a central hub to the smaller surrounding communities. The Gunnison – Crested Butte Regional Airport is also located in Gunnison, allowing convenient flights directly into the valley.
The City of Gunnison homes are mainly traditional style. Most of the homes are of moderate size and many having been built over 50 years ago. Gunnison homes are typically significantly more affordable than up valley homes.
