Known for its world-class trout and salmon fishing, the Town of Almont is located on Highway 135 between Gunnison and Crested Butte at the confluence of the Taylor and East Rivers, which form the Gunnison River. Other opportunities include whitewater rafting, all-inclusive equestrian and fishing resorts, climbing and many opportunities to access and camp on National Forest land. Conveniently located near both Gunnison and Crested Butte, you can enjoy the opportunities the bigger Town of Gunnison offers and the quaint charm of the Town of Crested Butte and Mt. The area is known for having some of the best fly fishing in Colorado. With a population of approximately 300 people, the small community of Almont is made up of a post office, a couple fly fishing shops, whitewater rafting companies, a local restaurant and bar and vacation resorts offering small cabin lodging.
The Taylor Canyon extends twenty miles northeast from Almont to the Taylor Reservoir. The canyon and reservoir offer incredible camping, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting, horse back riding and of course- world class fly fishing. The Spring Creek Campground is located about half way between Almont and the Taylor Reservoir. Bordering the creek, it is an excellent location for fishing, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing and camping. The Taylor Campground, Rosieand Harmel’s Resort is also located at the base of Spring Creek. The resort offers horseback riding, a day spa, fishing, whitewater rafting and rock climbing.
There are properties for the year-round and seasonal enthusiasts. Homes, cabins and land characterize the market in the area and up through Taylor Canyon and Taylor Reservoir. This area is generally reasonably priced and offers seclusion, great fishing opportunities and public land access. Cottonwood pass, which offers access from Buena Vista is to be paved in the next several years, which is predicted to bring a boom to the area— making now a great time for new buyers and investors to make this area home.
